President Biden’s habit of calling around to make sure everyone is okay isn’t a habit he’s just picked up at the White House. As Hunter told CBS News: “He’s always done that. I mean always. He’s talked to each one of us. But I’ll tell you why: because he’s lost … because he, like me, knows what it’s like not to be able to pick up the phone and talk to your son.”
Nothing seems to have changed, then, since Biden revealed before the inauguration that he tries to make sure he keeps regular contact with his family at all times. “Every day I’m in contact with every one of my grandkids, my son and my daughter, but by distance,” Biden admitted then. “As a matter of fact, my son Beau’s children live a mile away as the crow flies … They walk over through the woods and through a neighborhood, and they sit out in the backyard in two chairs, and I sit up in the porch, and we have our conversations, because I’m not allowed to go hug them. I miss it,” he famously said (via Marie Claire).

The conversations are made more poignant by the fact that Joe Biden famously lost his young daughter Naomi in a car accident in 1972 (via Biography), before losing his older son Beau to brain cancer in 2015 when he was just 46 years old (via The New York Times).
Hunter admits that his father nearly lost him, too, thanks to substance and alcohol addiction that spun out of control after his older brother Beau passed away. During his interview with CBS News, Hunter revealed his father had to intervene when he began binge drinking: “He (then-Vice President Biden) came to my apartment one time … And this was when he was still in office as vice president, and so he kinda ditched his Secret Service, figured out a way to get over to the house. And I said, ‘What are you doin’ here?’ He said, ‘Honey, what are you doing?’ I said, ‘Dad, I’m fine.’ He said, ‘You’re not fine’.” Hunter admitted he went into rehab after that but didn’t stay dry for long. He relapsed, and did not become clean until he met his now-wife Melissa Cohen, who helped him detox before they married in 2019 (via ABC News).
